New Friend

This project was completed as part of a coursework unit on intercultural design. The brief was to display research and create collateral for a hypothetical service helping a refugee group in Australia. I conducted background research on Iranian refugees in Australia and developed a set of designs that were culturally appropriate. The logo pays homage to Iran’s millennia old tradition of geometric art styles. Rather than creating a stereotypical commercial flyer, the flyer is a formal invitation and reflects the Iranian tradition of taarof, respectfully offering assistance to clients as guests and friends instead of as customers.

For the infographic I used simple icons and bold colours to draw attention to facts about the plight of Iranian refugees in Australia. Importantly I wanted to emphasise that Iran contains many ethic and language groups, so any assistance the service offers cannot be one-size-fits-all. The colours used throughout are neutral and traditional to Persian art and culture, while avoiding specific colours that might evoke religion (Islamic green) or the Iranian government.
